Health and Safety Policy for Commercial Waste Removal Brixton
Purpose: This policy sets out the commitment of our commercial waste removal and rubbish collection services to maintain safe working environments, protect employees, contractors and the public, and ensure compliance with applicable health and safety regulations. The policy applies to all aspects of our commercial waste collection, disposal and recycling operations and is designed to support consistent, auditable safety performance across our service area.Policy Objectives
Our objectives are to: prevent injury and ill health, minimise risks associated with handling commercial waste, and deliver a professional rubbish removal service that manages hazards through control measures, training and monitoring. We will ensure that responsibilities are clear, resources are available and that safety is integrated into everyday operations.
Responsibilities and Roles
Management has overall responsibility for implementing this health and safety policy and shall:- Establish safe systems of work for all commercial waste activities;
- Provide adequate training, supervision and personal protective equipment;
- Ensure risk assessments and method statements are prepared, reviewed and kept up to date.
Risk Assessment and Control
Risk assessments are carried out for all routine and non-routine tasks, including loading, lifting, vehicle movements and waste segregation. Controls follow the hierarchy: elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative controls and PPE. Control measures are recorded and communicated to staff and reviewed when operations change.
Hazardous Waste Handling: Our procedures for handling potentially hazardous materials, including sharps, chemical containers, contaminated waste and electronic waste, require clear segregation, labelling and containment. Staff receive specific instruction on identification, secure packaging and the use of specialist contractors where consignment procedures or licensed disposal is required. We maintain a register of hazardous loads and ensure duty-of-care documentation accompanies each disposal.
Training, Competence and PPE
All employees undergo induction training that covers safe lifting, manual handling, vehicle safety, waste segregation, and emergency procedures. Ongoing competence checks and refresher sessions are scheduled. PPE is provided for each role and must be worn as required: high-visibility clothing, gloves, suitable footwear, eye protection and respiratory protection where risk assessment dictates. Supervisors will monitor use and replace PPE as needed.
Vehicle and Site Safety: Vehicles used for commercial rubbish removal are maintained to a high standard with routine inspections, load-securing checks and appropriate signage. Drivers operate under safe driving policies, manage waste containment to prevent spillage and follow routes and access instructions to protect staff and the public. At customer sites, personnel will maintain clear exclusion zones and use spotting and traffic management measures where necessary.
Accident, incident and near-miss reporting is mandatory. We maintain incident records, carry out investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Emergency procedures cover first aid, fire response, spill control and containment. Records of incidents and training form part of our continual improvement program, with periodic safety audits and reviews.
Contractors, Subcontracting and Compliance: Where external contractors are engaged for specialist commercial waste removal, we require evidence of competence, risk assessments and insurance. Subcontractors must comply with the same safety expectations as our employees and are monitored through audits and site inspections. Compliance with statutory duties, waste regulations and duty-of-care obligations is mandatory and regularly reviewed.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We will monitor performance through scheduled inspections, audits, toolbox talks and safety meetings. Data from incident reports, near-miss logs and audit findings will be used to improve controls and training. Safety objectives and performance indicators are reviewed at management meetings and the policy is formally reviewed at least annually or when changes in operations or legislation occur.Communication and Cooperation: Health and safety information is communicated through briefings, written procedures and visible signage. Employees are encouraged to raise concerns and suggest improvements. Our rubbish collection teams are consulted on operational risks and control measures, ensuring solutions are practical and effective.
